Styling is in the Details

Tabletop Accessories really pull a room together and make it look "styled".
Whether it's something as simple as a cute pair of bookends on shelf, a pair of jacks sitting on top of a stack of books, or an abstract sculpture, little nick nacks put the finishing touches on a room.

The question is, where to find these accessories...
Below, I shared some great and inexpensive ways to add a little pizazz to your room.
Adding a few of these pieces will make your room look straight out of an Elle Decor shoot!

Coffee Table Books

Every coffee table needs some interesting books to sit on top of it.
A coffee table without books is like a hot fudge sundae without the cherry on top... it's unfinished!

Pick books that appeal to you and your interests.
Fashion, Design, Food, Travel...
Sky's the limit here.

Fall is in the air

Hard to really believe Fall is in the air considering today is 86 and muggy. But before we know it the crisp chill of September will be upon us, causing us to hunt down our jackets & scarfs from the closet.
Bye Bye sandals and Rose, hello boots and hot cocoa.

Fall happens to be my favorite season. I love when the temperature is just cool enough that you have to wear a light jacket or scarf, but not so cold that you have to bundle.
The leaves changing color, the smell of cinnamon and pumpkin candles burning, making a fire on a chilly night while drinking red wine and cozying up with a blanket...

Of course another great thing about changing seasons is changing your wardrobe. By Labor Day I am so sick of wearing the same long dresses and sandals, I can't wait to pack them all away and say c'est la vie till next Summer.
I'm ready to break out a chunky knit scarf, jeans and my Frye boots!

Easy Homemade Hot Chocolate
Add 2 cups of milk and 2 cups of half-and-half to a small saucepan.
Warm the milk mixture over medium-low heat, then add a cup of good semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Stir it around, making sure it doesn’t get too hot.
If it’s too chocolatey for you, splash in 1/2 cup to a cup more milk. If it’s not quite sweet enough for you, add about 1 teaspoon of sugar and even a little vanilla extract.
Top with lots of yummy whip cream!

enjoy!

Soaking in the last of summer

As Labor Day approaches us, Summer is quickly coming to an end.
It's the last chance to take advantage of all the farm fresh veggies, herbs and outside grilling on warm summer nights.

My favorite,  Roasted Artichoke, Parmesan and Avocado Salad.

What you will need:
6 Baby Artichokes, washed, trimmed and quartered
2 Tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice
1 1/2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
 Salt & Pepper to taste
4 Cups Arugula
1 Avocado, Sliced
1/3 Cup Shaved Parmesan Cheese

Dressing:
2 Tablespoons Sherry Vinegar
1 Tablespoon Agave Nectar or Honey
3 Tablespoons Extra Light Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper to taste
Whisk all ingredients together.

For the salad:
Trim any hard ends off the artichoke leaves. Then cut each artichoke in quarters, lengthwise.
Bring a pot of water to a boil and place artichokes in. Boil for about 5 minutes. They will finish cooking in the oven.
Toss artichokes in a bowl with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Place them on a flat baking sheet.
Roast at 425 deg for about 10 min, until they start to brown.
In a bowl combine Arugula, Parmesan cheese and Avocado. Once Artichokes are cooled,  add them on top. Pour on dressing and toss right before serving.

With the salad I grilled some swordfish. Just marinated it in some Light Olive Oil, Salt, Pepper and Lemon. It was light and delicious!

And for a side,  French Lentils with Parsley and Lemon.

Lentils seem difficult and time consuming to make but they are actually really simple.
For every 1 cup of dry lentils cook with 2 cups water. (Just always keep the 2:1 ratio water to lentils and you can't go wrong.)
Cook them uncovered for about 20-30 minutes. Add water if needed to make sure the lentils are always covered. Drain and season with salt, pepper and your choice of fresh herbs, olive oil, lemon, and whatever else your heart desires.

Pop open a bottle of cold white wine and Bon Appetit!

Gallery Walls

I love a gallery wall for many reasons, but the thing I love most is that no two walls are the same.  Each gallery wall is unique in what the art is, what the frames look like, and the arrangement of how it is hung.
You can do a gallery wall of all photographs, all artwork, or a mix of the two.

Some images of inspiration

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a good gallery wall. You should purchase art as you find it and slowly build the wall after collecting pieces you love. There is no right or wrong way to create it, however I would suggest starting by lying all of your art and photographs you want to hang on the floor.  I would then trace the frames on a sheet of paper (or brown grocery bags are a good cheap option for larger frames) so you can play with the layout on the wall, before going at it with a hammer. My suggestion would be to start with one larger focus piece in the middle and build outwards. Tape the sheets to the wall and play around with the design.

You can be as creative as you want with your arrangement. I personally love using all different size frames and colors. I think it gives the wall character and shows your personality.
Just have fun!

Some websites to browse for reasonable art:

There is also the Affordable Art Fair in NYC. The next fair is October 4-7th, 2012, The Tunnel, Chelsea.

As far as frames, West Elm has great gallery frames and they are 15% off right now, until 9.10.12.
Pottery Barn also has a great selection of Gallery Frames and a bunch are currently marked down online.
Ikea is a good place to find more reasonable frames and they come in a ton of size options!

The kitchen isn't just for cooking...

There are many rooms and places in the home you'd think to accessorize, but rarely does the kitchen come to mind. There are so many fun and fab things to decorate your kitchen. Besides, it's probably the room you end up spending most of your time in, so you want to love being in it!

Artwork.
You don't necessarily think to put artwork in the kitchen, but really, why not?
I love these Fruit Prints, by Avalisa. You can frame them in anyway you like but I actually love the contrast of them with a light wooden frame and a white mat. I would love to see these hung on a grey wall.

Baskets.
Have you seen a cuter way to store fresh fruit on your counter? These ceramic Farmers Market Baskets come in 3 sizes and styles. I think they would look just adorable filled with fresh strawberries, blueberries and cherries!
Dish Towels.
I don't know anyone that actually likes doing dishes so why not make the task a little bit more fun with chic vintage dish towels. I'm one for simplicity so I think these Hammam Towels are perfect!

Storage Jars.
I know I personally get Flour and Sugar everywhere if I don't have them stored in proper jars. The bag ends up ripping, spilling everywhere and my cabinets are filled with flour and sugar!
I love these Chalkboard Storage Jars from anthropologie. You can write the names of your dry goods right across the slate painted medallion. They're clean and simple and you can say goodbye to a messy cabinet forever!

Spices.
I love to cook and am always grabbing for one spice or another. This Dean & Deluca Spice Rack is not only convenient but would look super cute on the kitchen counter.

Tea Time.
Steep yourself some afternoon tea with this Art Deco Teapot. It's stainless steel lining keeps the tea warm for up to 45 minutes. The tea won't just taste good, you'll look cute making it too.
Runner.
I love a vintage looking runner in a modern kitchen. It just brings an element of surprise laid out horizontally in front of the sink area.
This Floral Fresco Runner would be perfect!

Cookbooks.
Last, but definitely not least, an assortment of great cookbooks!
I love how they are arranged by color in the below photo.
(hanging pots, another kitchen decorating must!)
